With the cost of living continuing to rise, securing adequate funding for higher education has never been more critical.

It’s a challenge familiar to many, from those seeking funding to advance their career, change careers, or return to work.

For professionals aspiring to improve their management credentials, obtaining a Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ),(for example a Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND) in leadership and management) can be a significant step towards career advancement.

These qualifications not only enhance your knowledge and skills but can improve your employability in a competitive job market - and can lead to a degree. However, the costs can be daunting.

Fortunately, several funding options are available, including a Student Loan from the Student Loan Company which can help pay for university or college tuition fees and help with living costs.

For courses starting in January 2026, the UK government is planning to introduce a new funding scheme called the Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE). The LLE will allow people to develop new skills and gain new qualifications at a time that is right for them.

How Much Does an HTQ (HNC/HND) in Leadership and Management Cost?

When considering an HTQ (including an HNC or HND in management), it is essential to understand the costs involved.

A degree contains three levels - 4, 5 and 6 - each corresponding to a year of study. An HTQ can be at level 4 or 5, whereas the final year of a degree is at level 6.

For UK students, tuition fees for each level of a degree course are capped at £9,250. However, HTQs delivered by colleges are typically priced lower at £6500.

If you study part-time, usually annual fees are halved, but you commit to paying the full course fee over a longer period.

Funding Options to Cover Your HTQ (including HNC/HND) Costs

Securing funding can be a crucial step for anyone intending to pursue an HTQ in Leadership and Management.

There are various financial support options available, including grants, loans, and scholarships, to help cover these expenses.

It's important to thoroughly understand these options to ensure you choose the most suitable financial support, allowing you to focus on your educational opportunities without the burden of financial stress.

Student Loans

Student loans are a popular option for funding further and higher education, for HTQs (including HNCs and HNDs).

These loans are available to eligible students, with repayment terms that typically begin after you start earning above a certain threshold.

While student loans can provide the necessary funds to cover tuition fees and living expenses, it is important to consider the long-term implications. The debt will need to be repaid, and interest accrues over time, which can be a drawback for some.

Grants and Bursaries

Grants and bursaries are non-repayable forms of financial aid, often awarded based on factors such as income, background, or specific needs, and can significantly reduce the financial burden of your studies.

To apply, you’ll need to research the available options, often provided by government bodies, charities, or educational institutions, and apply.

Scholarships

Scholarships are another excellent source of funding, typically awarded based on academic merit, financial need, or specific talents.

Some institutions offer scholarships, and competition can be fierce. To increase your chances of securing a scholarship, it’s advisable to start your search early, prepare a strong application, and ensure you meet all eligibility criteria.

Employer Sponsorship

Some employers offer sponsorship as part of their professional development programmes, covering the cost of further education for their employees.

If you’re already employed, it may be worth discussing sponsorship opportunities with your employer. When approaching this conversation, be prepared to explain how the HTQ (including the HNC or HND) will benefit both you and the organisation, and consider negotiating terms that work for both parties.

Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE)

The Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) is a government initiative designed to provide flexible student finance throughout an individual’s lifetime and will fund long and shorter courses than can lead to an HTQ.

It allows individuals to access funding for education and training at different stages of their careers, making it easier to upskill or retrain as needed. The LLE is expected to be used to fund long and shorter courses than can lead to HTQs, including HNCs and HNDs in leadership and management.

It is expected to come into effect in 2026 but that date may change since a lot of details still have to be decided.

Combining Funding Options

It’s often beneficial to combine different funding sources to cover HNC/HND costs. For example, you might take out a partial student loan, secure a grant or bursary, and negotiate employer sponsorship to cover the remaining costs.

Consider the hypothetical case of Sarah, a student who successfully funded her HNC in leadership and management by combining a partial student loan with a bursary from a local charity and sponsorship from her employer.

By blending these sources, Sarah was able to cover all her costs without accumulating significant debt.
